Body acne

What is body acne?

Body acne is the same as facial acne, just on the body (back, upper shoulders, chest). Studies have proved that most individuals that suffer from facial acne (no matter what type), have the same amount of body acne. Although body acne is developed similar to facial acne, the skin on the body is usually thicker and has larger pores, resulting in more cases of severe acne at time.

What is meant by "Body Acne"?

By "Body Acne" we mean the following places:

  • Back
  • Chest
  • Shoulders
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Legs

The only places that body acne does not occur is the soles of the feet and the palm of the hands due to the fact that they do not have sebaceous follicles where acne is formed.

What causes body acne?

The exact cause of body acnes is unknown, although irritation can play a role in making the body acne worse than it already is. By irritation, we mean anything that can rub up against your skin. Irritation along with wet or sweaty clothing results in aggravation of the body acne and makes it worse. It is better to be aware of the small changes you may make, instead of constantly obsession over avoiding irritation on the body completely.

What treatments are there?

There are, thankfully, very highly effective treatments for body acne which are split into 2 categories.

Light to moderate body acne

Cleanse the skin and allow it to be completely dry, as well as apply alpha hydroxy acid (10%).

Moderate to severe body acne

Regimen that consists of cleansing the skin gently and applying 2.5% benzoyl peroxide as well as 10% alpha hydroxide acid.

Accutane may be required for the very severe, widespread and scarring cases.
